High Profile Relationship Conflicts and Problems: What Could Happen in Minnesota?

PDF Print

It is almost impossible to avoid high profile relationship conflicts reported in the media involving allegations of extra-marital affairs, child custody disputes, parenting issues, prenuptial agreements, property divisions and spousal support.  Of course, what is reported in the media and what is factual in a particular situation can be quite different.

Still, it is sometimes easier to understand situations in our own lives by drawing upon circumstances reported in higher profile cases.  In situations similar to Tiger and Elin Woods, Kate and Jon Gosselin, Madonna and Guy Ritchie, Amy Winehouse and Blake Feilder-Civil and Usher and Tamika Foster, what could be relevant legal issues under Minnesota Law?  My intent in drawing from such high profile situations is to facilitate an understanding of Minnesota law.

A couple of important points:

1.    The information drawn from situations reported in the media is based upon what is in the public domain, which may or may not be entirely accurate.  The purpose of utilizing such information is to illustrate possible scenarios under Minnesota law, not to vouch for the accuracy of the information;

2.    Drawing upon publically reported information in high profile situations is not intended to minimize or find humor in these unfortunate events or circumstances.  For anyone dealing with the end of a marriage or a relationship, the pain is very real.

3.    I obviously cannot predict how a case would proceed, what strategies would be used and what decisions may result by drawing upon reported information in high profile cases.  My comments are intended to educate and should not be relied upon as legal advice or construed as how I would handle actual cases with similarities to high profile cases.
